Mexico 2019, Day #4 - Guanajuato, La Valenciana Mines, Missing Passports?

Wednesday, March 6, 2019

This day started off with breakfast in this beautiful building. This painting depicts some legends of Guanajuato. This building used to be a grainery!

Our hotel - Hotel Hacienda de Cobos

The view from the street by the La Valenciana Church/mine

Un perro, su nombre es Pintor. (A dog, his name is Painter)

Pintor!!

He was enjoying the head scritches.

These paintings were huge! I can't even guess how big..

Pinter followed us on our tour lol.

The mouth of the Valenciana Mine.

This painting depicts a mine worker mining by candlelight since they didn't have electricity back then. Some miners actually went blind from coming out during the day and going into the sunlight from the dark mine.

Salvador!!

Christine and mom.

Castillo Santa Cecilia. This is a hotel that was built in the 1950's. I thought it was an actual castle before reading about it hahaha.

So we were having a lovely day exploring Guanajuato and were heading to our next excursion of the city tunnels and were going to stop for lunch first BUT mom had her little purse stolen out of her over the shoulder bag. She was actually holding onto it because there were so many people on the sidewalk but it bottle necked due to some scaffolding. They were painting a store front so everyone was bumping against each other and she lost grip of her bag. She thought she felt something to she stopped once she got through and sure enough she was missing her little purse. It had her passport, license, credit cards, and some cash.

It's a blessing we had Salvador with us because we wouldn't have known where to start or where to go. He called the mine in case she forgot it in the store but it wasn't there. He reported it to the police immediately and took her to the police station. The rest of us walked around the area it was stolen to see if it was ditched after the cash was taken and then we couldn't find the police station so we just went back to the hotel.
When we couldn't find the police station we headed back and we stopped for the churros that we had passed earlier. They were pretty amazing but Cheryl's homemade churros are better.

Mom, Salvador, and Mya met us back at the hotel where we hung out for a bit and mom needed to relax for a bit as it was setting in what was happening. After a bit we headed out to the internet place so she could print out the forms and get her ID that her boyfriend was sending from home. After that we had to go to get her picture for her passport. After all that we missed the excursion by an hour or so but it was obviously more important to make sure mom could eventually come home lol. Instead we grabbed an early dinner and enjoyed the walk home.

The restaurant we stopped at for dinner.

The walk home from dinner. Guanajuato city has regulations for buildings. You own up to your door and anything outside is regulated. You cannot have flashy signs or lights.

We finished the evening just hanging out at the hotel and enjoying each others' company by the pool. Salvador ran out and picked up a speaker for us lol. He's the best.

Day #5 - shopping in Tonala, Mom tries to get her passport in Guadalajara, and back to La Penita.
